I always thought these looked like the designers saw an early E-Class wagon and then tried to draw it from memory.

That is actuall y quite close to what actually happened. Tata used to build Mercedes cars in India under license, before Daimler took over operations on its own. The Estate was designed off of this, and was effectively the love child of a contemporary E-Class and the Tatamobile Ute.
